IT'S QUIET. TOO QUIET.

Post-Apocalyptic City by the incomparable Dennis Chan
Is it just me or have things been eerily quiet on the blogosphere? I get on and I feel like I'm walking through an abandoned post-apocalyptic city and there's no one around but me and a few lurkers who duck for cover as soon as they see me. It's just me on my own out here. No birds. Not even crickets. Not even a faithful German Shepherd for company.

Heloooooooo? Anyyybodyyyy?

Is it just me? Am I the forgotten man? Mu numbers are down and dropping steadily. Has everyone moved to Reddit?

Or maybe that's just the way it goes. I've hit my peak at this here blog and it's all downhill from here. Which is unfortunate because I'm starting to do some of the best work I've ever done.

Oh well. Nothing to do but carry on. Do what I do. Watch out for mutants. Keep looking for signs of life.

Let me know you're out there... if you're there.

G. W. THOMAS on HAWK CARSE

My partner in literary crime and extortion, G. W. Thomas has a guest post at Michael May's Adventure Blog. It's all about a little remembered Sci-fi hero from the pulp era; Hawk Carse.

As usual, Thomas' knowledge of the subject is voluminous and fascinating. Check it out!

The author of “Hawk Carse” was one of the Age of Wonder’s great mysteries. Who was Anthony Gilmore? The answer turned out to be Harry Bates and Desmond W. Hall, the editor and assistant editor of the magazine that published Hawk’s four original adventures, Astounding Stories of Super-Science, what fans now call the Clayton Astounding. This magazine was the first to offer Science Fiction as an adventure medium (not a hobbyist magazine like Amazing or the high-brow of Campbell’sAstounding in 1938) for Pulp readers during the Depression era. And the hero of such a magazine would have to be an amazing adventurer.

Living on the Saturnine moon, Iapetus, Hawk roars around the solar system in The Star Devil, the fastest and most up-to-date cruiser. Amongst Hawk’s allies is Friday, the black man rescued from a Venusian slave-ship by Carse, nick-named ‘Eclipse’. He is a muscular and quick-witted friend. Master Scientist Eliot Leithgow (or M. S.) is the scientific mind behind Carse’s modern gadgetry, working away in his secret laboratory to create new and exciting weapons for Carse to use against his sinister enemies such as Kui Su, the evil puppet-master behind the criminals of the solar system, master to men like Judd the Kite. The model for this dastardly villain isn’t hard to spot: Sax Rohmer’s Dr. Fu Manchu. Along with Rohmer’s good guys and bad guys, Gilmore also inherited his racial elements, but more on that later.

THE ROYAL OCCULTIST

Joshua Reynolds, when he's not writing Warhammer novels for Black Library, writes a series of stories about CHarles St. Cyprian, a supernatural investigator in the early 1920's. They're fantastic stories, so when he asked me to design a banner for his website and facebook page, I jumped at the chance!

Amazing Stories to Publish David Gerrold Comic Script: Star Trek & Dr. Who Fans Might Collide with a Bang! Theoretically of Course

As you know I am part of the AMAZING STORIES blogging team. It's something I am very proud of, so this news, announced this morning, makes me very excited. It combines one of my all-time favorite authors with two of my all-time favorite shows, plus a new favorite:

Ok, I’ll say it, if only to keep up with the current trend on the site: The Experimenter Publishing Company is pleased to bring you an Amazing First!
Our first piece of new fiction, and a graphic story to boot! But wait, it gets even better!
Several weeks ago David Gerrold (yes, the Tribbles guy*) announced on Facebook that he’d written a comic book script that had become orphaned through no fault of its own. Amazing Stories jumped on this potential opportunity and obtained a copy of the script for review.
Unbelievably hilarious. Totally nerdy.
From the opening panel to the very last David Gerrold has spun a tale of historic, inside jokiness and has extended that joke to encompass contemporary fare.
Arrangements were made for Amazing Stories to publish the story and, in conjunction with David’s DG Publishing imprint, produce a limited dead-tree edition.
Several comic artists were approached for the honor and Troy Boyle has been given the go-ahead. Troy has already begun preliminary character sketches and page layouts.
Amazing Stories will be publishing a few teaser excerpts from the script, as well as some of Troy’s preliminary artwork here over the next few weeks.
What is it about? Let’s just say that Star Trek fans and Dr. Who fans (or should that be Dr. Who fans and Star Trek fans?) are going to have something to talk about for at least the next century. And yes, there are Tribbles in there too. Soft Tribbles. Warm Tribbles. Tribbles no one would want to Exterminate.
This Fannish Friday we will be releasing a few of Troy’s illustrations and a few scenes from David’s script, so mark it on your calendars and don’t miss a single reveal as we all work our way towards publication!
The script will appear here exclusively on Amazing Stories and will also be made available in a limited print edition that will be available from the Experimenter Publishing Company and DG Publishing.

That’s your first clue: who are those guys and what are they doing in a graphic story together?
*David is we known for many other things besides his The Trouble with Tribbles Star Trek episode. His award winning novelette The Martian Child (Hugo, Nebula, Ted Sturgeon, Locus and HOMeR) was turned into a movie in 2007; he has several popular series including The War Against the Chtorr and Star Wolf; an earlier novel written with Larry Niven – The Flying Sorcerers – remains one of Science Fiction literature’s best inside jokes.
Troy Boyle is an American comic book artist and writer. Boyle is best known for his gritty revenge fantasy, The Return of Happy the Clown, written by Gary Francis. He has worked for Image Comics, Desperado Publishing, Caliber Press and Boneyard Press. Troy is currently working on pin-ups and covers for Main Enterprises.

SO WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?

Well, I can't tell you what I've been doing, but I can show you a little sneak peek at three pieces. Two are done and one is almost finished. After that I hope to work on a couple of pieces that I will be able to show off right away.

So here they are:

I can't tell you anything about them. Hopefully you'll find out soon enough.

There. I feel better. How about you?

ONE FOOT IN MY GRAVE

Pulpwork Author Joel Jenkins applies his purple prose to a different sort of tale, recounting the eventful life of a close friend. This fast-moving biography is packed with action and pathos and is available right here at a 20% discount if you type in the savings code of 5YRZ6A8W.
September Peterson has received death sentences many times from well-meaning doctors speaking in hushed tones. Living with cystic fibrosis means that he'll die from cystic fibrosis--a long and excruciating death--unless, by tempting fate, he can find a quicker, faster way to go.

When September's cheerleader fiancee dumps him for a college man, September picks fast cars, motorcycles, and hard alcohol to do the trick, then witnesses his life unravel into a series of death defying encounters--all the while battling his own inner demons.

One Foot in My Grave is also available for just $2.99 at Amazon andBarnes and Noble in Kindle and Epub formats, respectively.

THE TRAGIC DEARTH OF MD JACKSON

You may have read that wrong.

I mean dearth, as in: Lack of. There has been a distinct lack of MD Jackson's images -- a notable absence of pictures of semi-naked women holding sharp objects -- in this place, as opposed to images OF MD Jackson, just like the one above.

Did I trick you? Did I make you come here under false pretenses? Perhaps.

It's ironic that the busier I am the lazier I look at this blog. Truth is, I feel lazy. I feel tired and listless and unproductive. I have been working hard on a big commission since December as well as dealing with life, people, work, failed brakes and a million other things.

I have a couple of really good pictures that I want to post but they are tied up with projects that aren't ready to go yet, so I can't post them. I haven't had the chance to even do little doodles. if I had I would be posting them here -- little scribbles that mean nothing to anyone but me.

I have been blogging over at AMAZING STORIES which has been really fun and I'm really proud of that, but I miss being here.

A while back I lamented about the lack of time in a day and how eight perfectly good hours were wasted by sleeping. I've nocked that down to about five but it doesn't help much.

That eight hour chunk in the middle of the day when I am at, what they laughably call "work" -- now that could go, quite easily. They keep insisting on giving me money for it, however (the fiends!) which I just can't say no to. A big pile of cash could solve that quite easily, but they just don't leave those lying around. Or maybe they do and I'm always late getting there. I don't know.

(On that note: Buy my book!)

What is the point of this rambling post? It's like getting an incoherent phone call from a drunk relative late at night.

I'm not sure if I have a point. I turned 48 last month which I usually wouldn't bother me but lately I've been wishing I was younger and better looking. Well I can't get any younger but diet and exercise seem to help, which is nice. And there's always surgery if I ever get to one of those big piles of cash before anyone else does.

Another thing I wanted to rant about (this really is sounding like a drunken late night phone call, isn't it?) what's with the 69 followers? I've been stuck at 69 forever, it feels like. Don't get me wrong: I like the number sixty-nine just fine (I like the position even better) but that's a small number of followers when you compare it to other bloggers, like my buddy Cal who has 552 (I just checked).

Mind you, Cal is a blogging powerhouse. But even other bloggers like my lovely Ginger Ingenue has 170 and she disappears for months at a time, sometimes only leaving only one blog post.

You know what? Maybe I shouldn't complain. I'm really thankful that anyone shows up here at all and i'm really grateful for the 69 people who do follow me. You guys are great and I'm glad you are here with me.

Well, I think it's time to end this drunken phone call. I'll talk to you again once I've sobered up (I'm speaking metaphorically, of course. I'm not really drunk. Not at twenty after six in the morning!). When I come back maybe I'll show you some more pictures of semi-naked women holding sharp objects.

Take care of yourselves.
