WHAT THE...?
I'm in one of those states where I'm meant to be doing something but once I start I end up with something else.
I was trying to do preparatory sketches for a cover that features giant white apes and Martian Warrior Women but I ended up with this guy. I only just woke up but I think I need a nap.

I GET THE BLUES
I was trying to explain to my daughter last night why I love the music of Robert Johnson when I had an epiphany: Like a lot of middle age white guys (yes, I am aware of the irony) I love the blues.
Robert Johnson, Son House, Dave "Honeyboy" Edwards (whom I was fortunate enough to see in concert the year before he died), these were legendary blues musicians whose influence on modern music is immeasurable.
Something else that I realized is that I listen to the blues when I'm feeling blue and it makes me feel better. On the surface that doesn't make much sense, but I realized just last night why that is. Blues music takes all that pain and anguish, the sadness and hardship, and gives it somewhere to go. It's like the music channels all of those feelings out of you while you're listening.
Maybe that doesn't make any sense, (or perhaps it is my poor attempts to explain it), but it feels right to me.
I've been here and there. I've drawn a lot of pictures. I've written a bit, too. I'm not good at this self-promotion thing. Look, you want to know about me? just visit these websites. Okay?

THE ROAD TO REBOOT
Two properties have been announced as headed towards Remake Central.
Disney execs are apparently looking to revive The Rocketeer. Disney adapted Dave Stephen's graphic novel as a film in 1991. Despite being a decent film the movie tanked at the time. It's worth a second look, apparently. I say: Let it be. The film wasn't perfect but, what more could you do? Anything else will just get you further away from Dave STephen's original comic which was damn near perfect.
And Syfy announced that they have commissioned a script for a remake of Terry Nation's classic BBC 1970's sci-fi series Blake's 7. Nation is best known as the creator of the Daleks from Doctor Who. Blake's 7 was his own foray into TV series and although it has a cult following it never had quite the same visibility as Doctor Who. That may now change
This one I'm a little more excited by, probably because I don;t have as much emotional investment in the original. I've seen the first season and a handful of episodes after that. The overwhelming impression I have of the show was cheese special effects, funky 1970's costumes and hairstyles and tinny music.
However, a reboot will have to really kick it up, because since Blake's 7, several other series have taken the basic idea and ran with it -- Stargate Universe, for example, and, of course, Farscape. The producers of this new version will really have to give it their all to top those two shows.
So which one has you more excited and/or dreading the prospect of a retread?

IF LIFE IS A BOWL OF THESE...
...then I've got it in spades!
We bought a huge flat of cherries and we've been making a valiant effort at eating them (without eating too many at one time because that can be disastrous). Finally I had to go through them and throw out all the ones on the bottom that had gone bad. This is what we still have left over.

DRAWING FOR A FRIDAY MORNING
I set a challenge for myself at the beginning of the week to do one drawing every day. Some were better than others but each was done in less than the hour I have in the morning before going to work. This is the last one as I intend to take the weekend off.
...aaaaand I'm spent.

DRAWING FOR A TUESDAY MORNING
You know, trying to be a writer and an artist, holding down a full time job, trying to put a daughter through university -- I don't know why I do it. I could have slept in for another hour this morning. I could sit and watch TV.
You know, I think sleep is the problem. If I didn't have those unproductive hours in the night...

SO LONG, JOE...
I used to love all of DC's TARZAN titles, particularly if they had a Joe Kubert cover, and most of 'em did. His was a giant talent and he kept on working right up until the day he died.

IMPOSSIBLE DREAMS
What if you could rent all the movies that never got made? Stanley Kubrick's A.I.? The Terminator starring O.J. Simpson? Any movie with Nicholas Cage after his gender reassignment surgery?
Don't let the subtitles turn you off, or the length (22 minutes, a daunting amount of time for our ADD generation, I know). Impossible Dreams is a beautiful film particularly if you are a film fan, a fan of Stanley Kubrick, or just a fan of a sweet love story with a sci-fi twist. Based on the Hugo Award winning story by Tim Pratt.

THE MASK OF ETERNITY
I am super excited about this!
I am pleased to announce that THE MASK OF ETERNITY, my first full-length science fiction novel (that is, me writing as Jack Mackenzie), is now available exclusively for Kindle!
THE MASK OF ETERNITY is exciting Space Opera about a forgotten world, a powerful artifact and a galaxy on the brink of war.
Solis DeLacey, captain of the Alpha Centauri Sol Collective vessel Boston, has been sent to a newly discovered world rich in natural resources. But one ship, the Empress Jade and her crew has already gone missing while surveying the planet, dubbed Bounty, and the finger of suspicion is pointing directly to the heart of the Orion Hegemony, the ACSC`s sworn enemy.
DeLacey, her crew and a ship full of scientists find a world teeming with life including the enigmatic natives of Bounty, the Shum. The planet seems like a paradise where life does more than thrive, it excels.
But when they find the wreckage of the the Empress Jade, they also find definitive evidence that the Hegemony was involved in her destruction.
With the arrival of a Hegemony vessel crewed by Da’baa’kh, ruthless, animal-like soldiers, the game changes. The Da’baa’kh are hell bent on finding an ancient treasure – an artifact powerful enough to bring an entire Collective to its knees.
Now DeLacey must discover its secret and defeat her enemies before the galaxy is plunged into total war…
