MATTHEW STAWICKI

As with Glen Orbik this is an artist whose work I have seen on the cover of many books but I did not know who he was. Matthew Stawicki started out working traditional medium in 1992 but in the last few years switched to digital painting.

What I like about his work is the very lush "painterly" look that his pieces have. I like digital work that doesn't look "digital" and these very definitely don't look digital. His paintings remind me (in a good way) of some of Tim Hildebrandt's work

You can see more of his artwork on his website at http://www.mattstawicki.com/index.html

I've been here and there. I've drawn a lot of pictures. I've written a bit, too. I'm not good at this self-promotion thing. Look, you want to know about me? just visit these websites. Okay?

This picture made me stop what I was doing when I came across it. It's by a U.K. artist named Melvyn Grant. The bio on his website makes him sound like a bit of a flake, but he is an artist of obvious talent.

This picture speaks to me, but I'm not sure what it is saying. There is something about the lonely landscape and the tight compoosition that appeals to me.

Not to mention the dinosaur and the nekkid chick.

GLEN ORBIK

Here's an artist that I discovered recently. I had seen many of his covers and liked them a lot without knowing who the artist was until I stumbled on his website.

Orbik was a student of illustrator Fred Fixler, a highly skilled illustrator best known for painting movie posters and elegant pretty girls:

Fred had been a student of Frank Reilly and Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Students' League (along with fellow classmates James Bama, among others). After a Fixler retired, Orbik took over teaching many of his classes.
Orbik has painted covers for comic books and mass-market paperbacks and hardcovers. He works in the traditional (non digital) style, the same tradition as many of the old pulp cover artists.

Process

I always find it fascinating to watch an artist at work. Here's one minute of Greg Manchess painting a Princess of Mars picture at ComicCon.
