THE GANTLET BROTHERS

I feel pretty secure talking about these guys now.

These are the Gantlet Brothers. Who are the Gantlet Brothers?

Well according to author Joel Jenkins:

There are five Gantlet Brothers, which is five more than the world’s assorted espionage agencies think there needs to be! Join Fritz, Sly, Matthias, Mitz and Otto as they lie, cheat, steal and shoot their way through concerts and conspiracies alike!

This artwork was for the cover for an upcoming collection of stories featuring the Gantlet Brothers. It's not available yet, but you can find the Gantlet Brothers previous novel, THE NUCLEAR SUITCASE at the Pulpwork Press website.

HOUDINI AND DOYLE

Okay, this sounds exciting! J. Michael Straczynski (the creator of Babylon 5 and screenwriter for Changeling) will be writing a picture for Dreamworks about Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

DreamWorks has purchased the original screenplay Voices From the Dead from Changeling writer J. Michael Straczynski. The thriller delves into the real-life relationship between magician Harry Houdini and Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle.
Houdini and Doyle, who was a leading Spiritualist at the time, met in 1920 and became friends for a while despite long-running arguments about the existence of the supernatural. Doyle included a chapter in his book The Edge of the Unknown that claimed that Houdini had psychic powers, while Houdini often used his acts to debunk fraudulent claims about the spirit world.
Straczynski's script creates a fictional account of the two teaming up with a psychic to solve a set of murders in 1920's New York.
The CAA-repped Straczynski also co-wrote the 2009 action thriller Ninja Assassin, and he has screenplays in development at Disney (Shattered Union), Warner Bros. (Forbidden Planet) and Marvel (Silver Surfer). In TV, he was a writer-producer for Babylon 5, Jeremiah and Murder, She Wrote, among others.

STRANGE GODS

I can post this picture now as it's publication has been announced here.

This is the cover art for STRANGE GODS OF THE DIRE PLANET by Joel Jenkins. It is the fourth novel in his Dire Planet series. It's a cracking story with lots of action.

Here are some of the sketches just for the heck of it.

KNEES ARE IMPORTANT

So it was lunchtime and I left the newspaper office to go home for a bite. Right outside the front door, just past the sidewalk, is a huge pudle of melting slush. It's less than three feet wide and I'm wearing a pair of black slip-on shoes because my lace-up dress shoes with the extra thick rubber sole and the grips recently lost the aforementioned sole.

But it's less then three feet and despite the fact that I am a 46 year old man in questionable shape for one shining moment I am Gene Kelly and I can not only leap over the puddle I could probably pirouette at the same time and make a three point landing.

Obviously age has made me delusional.

As I leap off the curb the delusion fades and I think instead about Maury Chaykin as Nero Wolfe negotiating a puddle in an episode of the A&E television series. "Whatch out for the..." warns Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin. Maury leaps over the puddle with all the grace of an epileptic walrus. "Woah!" marvels Archie. "You're like Ray Bolger, there"

I imagine I looked more like Nero Wolf than I did like Gene Kelly, nevertheless, the result was not pretty.

As I pushed off from the curb something happened inside my right knee.

It felt like a big, thick rubber band suddenly got stretched really tight and then  just as suddenly let go. A searing hot pain flared in my knee and shot all the way down my shin and up into my thigh.

I landed on the other side of the puddle and had to lean on a parked car for support while I gritted my teeth against the pain, which was not going away. A passing woman made some comment about the awful weather. I couldn't make sense of what she said so I just smiled and nodded, trying to cover up my agony and trying to remember how to draw breath.

I managed to hobble across the parking lot to my car. Then I had to drive and having to press the accelerator was sheer agony. I gritted my teeth all the way home.

Sleeping was difficult last night. I couldn't stay in any one position for too long so I tossed and turned all night.

Now at this point I should back up and admit that my right knee has been bothering me since the summer. We had a lot of house guests and I spent a fair amount of time moving furniture in preparation. I just figured I had twisted it wrong and was waiting for it to heal. Some days it was better than others. As summer turned into fall and then into winter the pain persisted and I had just about convinced myself that  had arthritis and chalked it up to age, But this incident convinced me I should see my doctor.

I managed to get to my doctor's office this morning. The nurse weighed and measured me and, to my dismay,  confirmed that I more closely resemble Nero Wolfe rather than Gene Kelly.

My doctor is a very tall South African man. He pulled and prodded at my leg while I gasped in pain. When he was done he scheduled me for an X-ray and told me that I had likely damaged the anterior crusciate ligament. He was a little concerned that it might have snapped which sound really nasty and which looks really hideous if this graphic I found on the internet is to be believed. I hope this is not the case.

Either way the doctor told me not to do anything too strenuous for the next little while. "Don't be climbing up banks or anything," he said. I said I wouldn't but didn't tell him that I very likely wouldn't be doing that anyway. He also said to put some ice on it and take some Advil. I'll pass on the Advil. I willl do the ice, but I'll save some cubes back to drop into a double scotch (or two).

So that's where I am. The practical upshot of this is that a wet foot would have been preferable and it's not likely that I will be doing any dancing with Cyd Charisse in the near future.

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL?

I'm not sure if this is THE paradigm shift that will tip the balance in favour of e-books over the printed book, but I would certainly consider it a signpost along the way.

According to Appleinsider.com:
"The state of Georgia is reportedly considering a plan to get rid of conventional textbooks and shift middle school classrooms in the state to wireless iPads built by Apple, following positive iPad trials in place by schools around the US.

Republican Senate President pro tem Tommie Williams told the press earlier this week that the Georgia legislature and educators are considering a proposal by Apple to replace printed books, according to a report by Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"Last week we met with Apple Computers," Williams said, "and they have a really promising program where they come in and their [sic] recommending to middle schools – for $500 per child per year, they will furnish every child with an iPad, wi-fi the system, provide all the books on the system, all the upgrades, all the teacher training – and the results they’re getting from these kids is phenomenal."

The senator added, "we’re currently spending about $40 million a year on books. And they last about seven years. We have books that don’t even have 9/11. This is the way kids are learning, and we need to be willing to move in that direction.”"
Overhead projector? There's an app for that.

STAR WARS BEGINS

Reblogged from http://www.wired.com/:

"Fans can be obsessive, Star Wars fans may be the most obsessive and Jambe Davdar may well be the most obsessive of them all. He has just released his third feature-length documentary/commentary chronicling the original trilogy of George Lucas’ beloved Star Wars and it’s called “Star Wars Begins“. Like his two previous documentaries, Returning To Jedi and Building Empire, Star Wars Begins is an unofficial look at the creation of the classic movie and features tons of deleted scenes, alternate takes and different angles, bloopers, original set audio recordings, and an insane amount of commentary from cast and crew, culled from probably every documentary, interview and commentary track ever made about Star Wars.

What’s really interesting about the format is that Davdar’s documentary is feature-length, and follows the flow of the original movie itself with the deleted scenes added where they would have been, and interviews placed over the top of the action they’re describing. The overall effect is much more engrossing than a DVD commentary track and the wealth of material contained makes it well worth sitting through the 14 separate YouTube clips. Personally, I’ve never heard the seen the deleted scenes of Biggs on Tatooine and hearing David Prowse saying Vader’s dialogue makes you wonder how this guy was ever gonna be the galaxy’s bad-ass.

Davdar has obviously invested a hell of a lot of time (nearly 4 years!) and effort into creating this film, and the other two parts of his own trilogy, and I doubt that anything on the forthcoming Blu-Ray box set will go into as much detail or exude as much love for the subject matter as these films do. Watch them now on YouTube (part 1 is below) and let’s hope Mr. Lucas doesn’t send the heavy mob in."

SNOW WARRIOR: FINAL PAINTING

I finished it this morning. Well, finished is probably too strong a word. It would be closer to reality to say that I decided I'm just not going to work on it anymore. I've learned what I needed to learn and now it's time to move on.

SNOW WARRIOR

I don't usually post works in progress, but I've posted so little the last little while. This is just a personal piece I'm doing in between assignments. I'm trying out different techniques.

Here is the underpainting that I've started with. I worked right overtop of a sketch that I scanned from my sketchbook.

Here I've added a colour layer overtop and done a quick colouring job. I'm not happy with these results and I am still working on the final piece which I will post in a couple of days when it's done.

As with most things like this where I'm deliberately trying to avoid falling back to my usual techniques it can be quite frustrating. But it's not the finished artwork that's important but the things you learn along the way.
