THAT'S REALLY SUPER, SUPERGIRL - 2

Here's Supergirl again. I was dissatisfied with her boobs so I fixed them, made them bigger and brought them closer together. I like it much better now. What do you think?

INTERSTELLAR AGENT

What a difference a day can make. I sketched this pose one day, then abandoned it because I thought it wasn't working. Went back to it the next day and saw something in it. I kept working at it and this came out.

I've been thinking a lot about Barbarella. I guess this is my version of that kind of character. She doesn't have a name as yet but she has to have a quirky sidekick and a robot. Maybe I'll find them soon as well.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARLAN!

I have mentioned before about meeting Harlan Ellison. As today is his 76th birthday I thought it would be appropriate to cobble together my memories of that evening. So here it is:

IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY...

Well, actually it was 18 years ago that Harlan Ellison came to Vancouver to speak. It was in late May and close to Mister Ellison's birthday. My friend Leonard Wong was organizing the event and we came up with the idea to throw a bit of a birthday celebration for Harlan.

I was the host of a weekly sf radio show called The Ether Patrol and we were publicizing the event. We booked a local Thai Restaurant and invited many of the local authors to come by. Unfortunately few were able to show up. Most of the guests were staffers of the show. Comic artist George Metzger and his son were in attendance as well as Harlan's former secretary and her husband Wes who had moved to the Pacific Northwest.

Harlan and Susan arrived and Harlan, in one of the classiest moves I have ever seen, took what could have been an awkward situation (a birthday party thrown by people that you don't even know) and turned it completely around. He made a point of meeting all the guests and hosts, putting everybody at complete ease.

The dinner went really well other than an incident where the co-host of the show, Kyle Kirkwood, tried to take Harlan's picture.

After the dinner we walked to the Vancouver Art Gallery where the talk was to take place and I took the opportunity to chat with Harlan. I can't remember what we talked about but I do remember it being a very pleasant conversation. As we approached the Art Gallery Harlan didn't see any people. He kept shaking his head and saying "You're gonna lose money on this," to Leonard. He didn't have to worry. The audience was already inside and waiting to get into the specific room in which he was going to speak.

I had the privilege of introducing Harlan to the audience. I was nervous but it went well other than getting a few facts wrong, which Harlan corrected by shouting them up at me. That done Harlan took the stage and enthralled us for the better part of two hours followed by an exhaustive autograph session.

After it was all over I walked partway to the hotel with Harlan and Susan. He pointed to me and said "You're weird". I wasn't quite sure how he meant it but I decided to take it as a complement. Just before we parted he saw a penny on the ground. "You know what my wife says? If you pick up a penny and put it in your pocket, then all day long you will have a penny in your pocket," Harlan was too wiped out to pick up the penny (he was suffering from chronic fatigue) so I picked up the penny.

"Here, Harlan," I handed it to him. "Have a penny in your pocket."

People have said that Harlan Ellison is acerbic at best, outright rude at worst, but that evening (and the week before when I spoke to him on the phone for about an hour) I found him to be charming, engaging and every inch the gentleman.

He is a class act and it is an evening that I remember with a great deal of fondness.

(By the way: these are NOT my pictures. The pictures from that evening are not in my possession. But this is basically how he looked back then.)

MY DAUGHTER IS THE COOLEST

Today in biology class, my daughter dissected a squid.

That may not seem like such an accomplishment, but that's not the cool part. The cool part was the brainwave she had when she pulled out the claw. She thought it looked like a quill pen so she cut a split in the tip, dipped it into the squid ink in the ink sack and wrote her name with it.

I don't have pictures of the event. I wish I did. You'll just have to trust me as I trusted her when she told me about it.

She says this is kind of what it looked like:

But without the convenient labels, of course.

I just thought it was so cool I had to share.

THIS MAKES ME DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY

Richard Curtis (writer of Blackadder, Bernard and the Genie, Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral), Stephen Moffat (creator of the amazing series Jekyll and now producer of Doctor Who) and Neil Gaiman (if you don't know, it will mean nothing to you). Gaiman is holding up the script that he has written for an upcoming episode of Doctor Who.

Joygasm!

"THAT" LOOK

A quick drawing of my wife as she gives me "That" look. I received it this weekend just as we were going to the symphony. I document that moment here because whenever she give me "that" look I am usually driven mad with desire for her, whereas she is just mad at my boneheaded behaviour.

INTERGALACTIC ECCLESIATICAL CRUSADE AGAINST THE CEPHELAPOD MENACE

This image just seemed to flow out of the end of my pencil. I will likely work it up into a full painting at some time in the future, but I feel too good about it not to share it.

It looks like there should be a kick-ass story to go with this image. Perhaps my buddy Cal over at Calvin's Canadian Cave of Cool, the only full time crusader against the cephelapod menace that I know, can come up with one.

DARK WORLDS #5 TEASER

DARK WORLDS #5 is coming! Work is proceeding on the cover art and there is still a long way to go but here is a taste of it for you -- just a snippet. This is not completed artwork, but it might give you a hint as to what kind of an issue it's going to be.

Here's another one:

MINIMALIST FANTASY PIN-UP

Minimalist, obviously because of the simple lines. She's a pin-up because she is posing and she is naked. What makes it a fantasy pin-up? She's holding a spear.

Does it work? I will eventually work it up as a full painting. Eventually.

FRANK FRAZETTA

Frank Frazetta has passed away. He was 82.

It has been a sad day for me today. I knew that it was unlikely that we were ever going to get any new masterpieces from him. Being realistic, his best work was well behind him. Still, hearing the news of his passing has really affected me.

Frank Frazetta was an icon of Fantasy illustration and a personal inspiration to me. He, above all others, inspired me to become an illustrator. His paintings were so strong it was like being punched in the face with them. He could induce fear, wonder and longing in me, sometimes all with the same picture. I, like many others, would often buy a crappy book just because it sported a Frazetta cover.

He had no equal.

Goodbye, Frank. Your amazing pictures surrounded me growing up and your images still crowd my imagination. You are an icon and an inspiration.

AN EXPERIEMENT ALONG EROTIC LINES Step 3

Well, step three is to take it into Corel Painter. I wasn't sure if I just wanted to colourize it and keep the black lines or work it up into a full painting. Once I got started I pretty soon realized that I was on my way to turning this into a full painting. This is where I'm at with it so far.

I have to leave it for a bit while I concentrate on the wraparound cover for DARK WORLDS #5, but I will post again on this when I am able to get back to it.

And no more philosophy about the nature of eroticism. Not today, anyways.

AN EXPERIMENT ALONG EROTIC LINES - STEP TWO

I am reposting this from my art blog. I am looking for some different opinions regarding this:

Here is STEP TWO. I've darkened the lines and, as you can see I have changed the figure's position a bit. The line is cleaner now. I didn't have to boost the contrst as much with this one. I did have to do a bit of clean up but only because my scan plate was dirty. Need to clean that.
I may be overintellectualizing the process of drawing a simple pin-up, but it is fascinating to me how erotic an image I can create with simple lines. I would appreciate feedback on this. What do you think? Is this picture erotic?
Not sure what step three is going to be. I'll have to take some time and think about it.

AN EXPERIMENT ALONG EROTIC LINES

I am reposting these from my art blog. I want to get some different opinions on this:

I've been thinking about this for a while. No, not about sex! Well, yes, sex... but not the way you think.

I have always been fascinated at how mere lines on paper can provoke such strong reactions in people. Anyone who knows the history of underground comics, particularly the Air Priates, knows all about that.

But I am really intrigued at how an artist's work can touch the pleasure centers of someone's brains, even to the point of sexual arousal with just a few lines on paper.

I've always been a fan of art that has "clean" lines. Examples of this would be the work of Adam Hughes (http://adamhughes.deviantart.com/) , Chris Saunders (http://alohalilo.deviantart.com/), and most recently Becca Whita (http://beccawhita.blogspot.com/).

What strikes me about these artists is how their artwork can arouse without being particularly realistic. Especially Saunders and Becca. Their style is cartoony, yet their images are erotic. To me it seems like a contradiction. The more you move away from the real thing (i.e; for a man -- a real naked woman standing in front of him) towards a stylized representation, one would think that the emotional response would be lessened, but that is not the case.

Either way, I thought I would try an experiment in lines, trying to create an erotic image with as few lines as possible. This is going to be a challenge for me because I tend to use a lot of lines and murky shading to get my images across. So here is STEP ONE.

As you can see in the above image I have really only just begun with a basic structure, trying to keep the lines as simple as I can. The lines are also very light. When I scanned it I had to really increase the contrast in Photoshop just so that it was visible.

I will post STEP TWO when it is finished.
