American painter Edward Hopper, most famous for his iconic Nighthawks painting, was born this day in 1882.
The above painting, 11 am, is one of my personal favorites.

The only painting of his that I know is Nighthawks, so nice to see another of his works -- thanks!
ReplyDeleteNighthawks is certainly his most well known, but this one is growing on me.
ReplyDeleteI like the sense of enclosure of the room contrasted with the amount of space in the room as well as the potential space with the open window. Theres something oddly claustrophobic about the way out central figure is so far over to the bottom right, yet she is clearly looking out towards a wider world.
I wish she were wearing some kind of clothing so that there could be some clue as to who she is and why she is sitting in this chair and looking out the window.
He has so many great paintings other than Nighthawks. It's a shame that they aren't as widely distributed.
ReplyDeleteErik, I like to think that the whole picture is a mystery. The fact that she is nude just adds to it and Hopper isn't inclined to illuminate. He leaves it up to the viewer to fill in the many questions.
Many of his pictures, particularly this one, remind me of David Lynch's films, his earlier (better) ones.
Frankly, by the shadows, it seems to be more like 10:16.
